the 1/8 npt fitting is for an ancillary output for the switch, a good fit will seal it from catastrophic failure. yes it is still critical for safe brakes but does not have to be flared as it is generally not subject to vibration and line flexing under application. and contrary to your comments, the nut on a double flare is an additional seal. When I was at Wagner-Lockheed and Bendix brake training years ago, It was taught that you tighten brake fittings to specified torque once, never back off until you are removing them, the line and flare are malleable, backing off and retightening only increases the chance of leakage. Just like PW wheel cylinder washers, they are a one time use item They are to be replaced anytime the firring block is removed.
