On the frame, near the front shock mount. Most are on the driver's side, but a few have been found on the passenger's side..
I've used several methods to reveal the numbers. Pencil rub, flap disc, wire wheel.. just as long as you start with the least aggressive. You don't want to accidentally grind a number away.
