It's likely they will be found somewhere in either of those locations. They are usually very faint and extremwly hard to find. The surface must be completely clean, and if there's any surface rust or pitting it's even worse. Once you think the surface is clean enough, hold a pencil flat against a white piece of paper and rub gently sideways until you see something that looks like a letter or number. It's a very frustrating, and awkward job.
