Very interesting information. I would never have thought to use pipe joint compound to fill the grooves. Any favorites? Something like Rectorseal teflon paste? Just fill in the grooves and scrape off what's not in the grooves?

I never would have guessed oil on the valve stems would be bad either. The main issue here is the Snow-Cat sat outdoors for probably 8 years and everything got rusty inside. I really had to pound that valve down so I could compress the spring and get it out. I cleaned up a couple rusty patches in the cylinders with 600 grit oil-soaked sandpaper too. Seemed a bit crude but I'm not going to tear the engine all apart and hone the cylinders properly.
