Pat Hogan's post about seeking 20" wheels for greater clearance in deep snow reminded me of an experience several years ago.
I was headed to a favorite hunting spot up in the mountains. The road was very steep, but this year the snow was particularly deep. The higher we went, the deeper it got. When we could go no farther and I tried backing down, we quickly got stuck. North Idaho has lots of trees. I hooked my winch cable to a tree on the side of the road and pivoted the truck slightly. I kept doing this with different trees until I had turned the truck to face downhill and off we went, back down the road.
My hunting partner was impressed.
The snow was close to 3' deep, but very dry and powdery. It would have been a better day to go skiing.
