This WC-53 retains its original powertrain consisting of the T214 230 cubic inch L-Head, 92 horsepower six-cylinder engine (torque rating of 180 ft/lbs at 1,200 rpm), coupled to a non-synchronized 4‑speed transmission (compound 1st gear as well as reverse) with 4x4 transfer case. The drivetrain was designed for military application requiring durability and simplicity in field conditions. The engine starts immediately and runs smooth. Given the 5,800 pound weight of the WC-53, it is a surprisingly powerful powerplant.
It is in very good original condition, and drives straight down the highway with minimal wheel play and stops as it should. Top speed is 55 mph, although this vehicle has rarely been pushed to its limit.
This truck has spent most of its life in the high desert climate of Northern California, always garaged, and, with the exception of a few rust bubbles below and behind the driver side door, it is predominantly rust free. Solid floors, panels and sheet metal all around. All glass is good and free of cracks. All window cranks operate as they should. All interior panels are included in the sale. With the exception of the windshield wipers, all vehicle electronics operate as they should. All lighting works as it should, as does the generator. A brand new 12 volt battery was recently replaced.
The Power Take Off (PTO) Winch operates as it should, and multiple tow chains and hooks come with the sale of the vehicle. There is also a period-like trailer (see pictures), and an abundance of parts and maintenance accessories that will also be included in the sale.
This WC-53 would make an outstanding candidate for restoration, or simply remain as is.
