6 tabs on wheel lock ring

I remember seeing the answer for this before, But old and and bad memory, it has eluded me.
I friend has a 900x16 power wagon wheel, That has 6 tabs around the out side of the lock ring, I have also had some like this over the years. What were the tabs for?
