Inertia, centrifugal force, mechanical leverage, flywheel effect? Those are the terms that come to mind. I really don't have any way to elaborate further, but that was the theory behind right hand thread on the right side and left hand on the left side. The nuts are not supposed to self loosen when configured that way.

Have you ever re-torqued your lug nuts on a vehicle where all four corners are right hand thread and found the the ones on the driver side have loosened more than those on the passenger side? I have. Or, worse yet, have you ever lost a wheel while driving down the road because you didn't realize the nuts were loosening while you were driving, and by the time you felt the incredible vibrations, it was too late? This happened to Martie and it was the left front tire and wheel that darted off to kiss the guard rail.
