I never set timing using the carb specs., I always used a timing light and timed per the spark advance for optimum engine performance. If the advance isn't working correctly, timing at TDC or two degrees before or after is not going to give you your engines best performance.
1800rpm 5.7 - 9.5 degrees advance.
