When you tap a motor and it runs, the brushes were stuck and not touching the armature. I had a Chevy Suburban where the starter stopped working. Of course the wife and kids were picking me up from work for our thanksgiving trip. I asked the maintenance man for a hammer because it wasn’t working. He gave me the strangest look. He came with and watched me tap it 3 times and my wife started it up. I got another look from him. I replaced the brushes when we got to my brother’s place.
