Yep, it made it fairly easy to sand and finish off, but no matter what we do or what products we use to make a steering wheel look better, rest assured you're going to get new cracks. If you look closely at my picture, you'll notice there is a hairline crack on each of the three spokes that are outside the area I fixed as the Bakelite will continue to shrink, and crack, as heat and cold effect it also. So for the 28 years since I repaired it, that's not bad, and if I'm around the next 28 years, I may have to repeat the process. :=)
