Greg,

You are a good guy for wanting to help. My advice is to stay away from any agency, but drill way down to the guys on the front line.

Write up a list of your capabilities, and send it directly to local companies such as tree removal, excavating, towing companies, diesel repair, etc, etc.

Tell them you want to join their crew, and will work for free to help out. Even though you may feel you are benefitting them, you really are benefitting the poor person that has a tree on their house, or unblocking a road, helping get a generator running or pumping out a flooded basement.

I was a victim of a flood due to a hurricane storm surge. I remember the Red Cross going thru our neighborhood giving out free food from a truck. It was hilarious, because everyone had lost power, and were eating like kings because all our food was thawing out and the propane grills were the stoves. The last thing we needed was food!

All the guys on this forum could probably adapt to just about any problem that one would find in a disaster zone, and would be a big help during the aftermath. We could operate equipment, fix stuff that was broken, run a chain saw, drag debris out of the way, and so on.

I never met you, but I bet you would someday go home sore, tired and hungry - but satisfied that you helped out and made a difference.

Do it!!
