Use the guide bolts that Paul recommended. If your stopping at one inch away you are hitting the pilot bushing. The issue could be a pilot bushing problem or a clutch misalignment problem. Cycling the clutch pedal will realign the clutch and may let the input shaft align with the pilot bushing. If the bushing is deformed or too small you will have to replace it. Before you go to that trouble remove the trans input shaft and see if it will go in by hand. You will get your answer.
