If he is engaged in the splines and he used an alignment tool then it should go right in.
If he removed the bellhousing from an engine rebuild, he could now be out of crankshaft alignment with the bellhousing.
He might try using two bolts, one top, one bottom opposite sides to pull the trans. in. I've had to do this as well as align the splines. He probably is on an angle and the driven gear shaft is off center at the bushing.
