I wouldn't condemn the carb. just yet.
Backfiring is usually not a symptom of carb. issues, but usually a timing, or point gap issue.
Could also be a valve problem related to the
Two lower compression cylinders.
Doubt it's head gasket too, more likely
Carbon on valve seat.
Cylinder Leak down test or simple vacuum gage test should point you in the right direction.
