If the light was on juice was flowing from bat to ground via alt. Once the alt is putting out,the light has + to both sides so no flow, no light.
The light is in the exciter circuit. It gives enough juice to start the magnetism. But if you have an old alternator the rotor has residual magnetism built up, no 'jump start' needed. But it may take seconds for it to put out.
The 3rd wire is the sensor. If it is hooked to the ignition switch the regulator makes sure there is full voltage THERE. That makes up for any resistance in the system. Hooking everything to the output lug on the alt might only make 11 volts to run everything on,and charge poorly. But it has 14.2v at the alt!
So I run two wires on junk yard alts.
PS:later alts have an internal fan. And a more efficient regulator (square wave). They out out more at low rpms. And best, smaller, easier to mount, especially w/ PS.
